DELINEATING CONSERVATION PHYSIOLOGY SUCCESSES

Applying physiological approaches to conservation has the potential to lead to better-defined management techniques, highly sensitive monitoring, delineation of cause-effect relationships, and greater predictive capacity regarding the impacts of future environmental change. Despite a long list of potential applications, no assessment of how the field of conservation physiology has specifically contributed to conservation success has been completed. In our paper in Conservation Physiology, we outline eight areas of conservation concern, ranging from chemical contamination to invasive species to ecotourism, where physiological approaches have led to beneficial changes in human behaviour, management, or policy. In addition, we summarize the shared characteristics of the successes to identify emerging themes in the field in hopes of encouraging further development and use of physiological tools in conservation endeavours.
